Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild - Directors - Allan FUNG
馮意清 | FUNG Allan

No details

Hong Kong native Allan Fung studied communication arts at Mohawk College in Canada before moving to Texas to study film at Southern Methodist University. Afterwards he became a documentary producer and cameraman for Canada’s Global Television Network. He joined Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) upon returning to Hong Kong in 1979 and produced television series in the likes of Below the Lion Rock, directing one episode, Oyster Calamity.

In 1980, Fung directed his first film, A Grand Statement, which confounded audience with its radical stylization. Legend has it that riotous members of the audience at box office-gauging midnight screenings expressed their disapproval by slashing theater seats. His later tenure at Shaw Brothers as director of production and executive producer led to the production of highlyregarded projects such as An Amourous Woman of Tang Dynasty (1984). In 1985, Fung started his own production company, City Films, and directed Loletta Lee in the comedy Crazy Games. He directed Caper for D&B Films in 1986, followed by two Alfred Cheung vehicles, In Between Loves (1989) and Freedom Run Q (1992).

In 1991, Fung founded Panorama Entertainment, which produced films like Golden Chicken (2002), Naked Ambition (2003), A-1 (2004) and My Wife is a Gangster 3 (2006). He also formed the video-product company Panorama Distributions, releasing over 2,000 Chinese films, foreign titles, children’s programs and music videos. He then teamed up with directors Peter Chan and Teddy Chen in 2000 to found Applause Pictures, which set its sights on the Asian market with co-productions between Asian industries, such as Jan Dara (2001), One Fine Spring Day (2001), Three (2002) and The Eye (2002).

As one of the founding members of the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild, Fung was an executive committee member from 1989 to 1991 and a committee member by invitation from 1991 to 1993. He had also served as advisor to the Hong Kong Film Archive and the Film Programme Office.
