Leonard Heung Nap-hang was born in Hong Kong and entered film in the early 1980s as assistant director, later joining TVB as production assistant. He became a director in 1978, making such noted series as The Legend of the Book and Sword (1978) and The Justice Of Life (1989), in which future superstar Stephen Chow played his first leading role.
Heung returned to film in 1989 while also writing and directing stage plays. He made his debut as director with the low-budget Category III film Sex for Sale (1992), which became a surprise hit, taking in nearly HK$3 million at the box office. In addition, star Jerry Ku was also nominated for Best New Performer at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
He continued to direct in the 1990s, with works like Phantom Killer (1999) and Headlines (2001). Starting in 2000, he switched focus to making television dramas in Mainland China, directing such series as Landmine Warfare II (2010) and I Want to Get Rich (2012).
