Born in Shaghai in 1944, Kong Lung came to Hong Kong in 1962. He worked as an actor for the Mandarin film company Great Wall, appearing in over 40 films, such as Ying Ku (1967) and Pound of Flesh (1976). He then entered Rediffusion Television, working in various positions that included director and producer.
Kong left Rediffusion in 1980 and started directing films. His first feature is Our Darling Coach (1980), produced by Leung Lap-yan. That was followed by Daughter and Father (1981) and Once Upon a Mirage (1982), all featuring the story of children.
In the mid-1980s, Kong moved to Singapore, working with Leung on television there.
