Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild - Directors - Albert LAI
賴建國 | LAI Albert

It has been 37 years since my directorial career began in 1976. During this time, I have shot television dramas, films, concerts, music videos and commercials. I have yet to direct theater and documentaries, which I hope to do so in the future.

In the past few years, I have come to the realization that a director cannot only direct a film for his/her own liking. One must be mindful of the viewers’ feelings and give them something relatable. Whether it’s television or film, commercial or art cinema, we are in the entertainment business. We have the responsibility to entertain the masses.

I enjoy my work. Today, when I go to work, I still embrace the kind of excitement and happiness I had 37 years ago as a rookie director!

Born in 1953, Hong Kong native Albert Lai Kin-kwok joined Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) in 1976. Several years later, he turned down Phillip Chan’s offer to direct a film.

A year later, he directed the 1960s-inspired musical Young Dreams (1982) under the invitation of director Ricky Chan. The film underperformed at the box office but the serial dramas he directed at TVB were well-received. Meanwhile, thanks to actor Chow Yun-fat and talent manager Wallace Cheung introducing him to producer Vicky Lee Leung, Lai was able to directed The Sensational Pair (1983), a script that he and actor Kent Cheng worked on before Vicky’s Pearl City Film Production took on the project.

Lai later joined Wallace Cheung’s production company, primarily responsible for shooting concerts. Afterwards, he was contracted to Golden Harvest Productions for two years, directing And Now What’s Your Name (1984), My Heavenly Lover (1986) and Bitter Taste of Blood (1988). Later, he directed He Who Chases after the Wind (1988), starring Alex Man Chi-Leung, and Shadow Cop (1993), featuring Carina Lau and Waise Lee.

During that period, Lai also directed a few television dramas for TVB before relocating to Taiwan. Since 1997, he has been shooting television dramas in Mainland China.
