Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild - Directors - Dante LAM
林超賢 | LAM Dante

In the 1980s, I would watch at least two Hong Kong films every week. Every Saturday morning, I would buy a ticket for that night’s midnight feature. At the time, film is an important part of my life.

I unexpectedly entered the film business in 1985 without a film school education or the knowledge of a cinephile, yet cinema has embraced me for over twenty years already.

Dante Lam, born in 1964 in Hong Kong, began his film career in 1985 when he was hired by Cinema City to be a production assistant. In the late 1980s, he became Gordan Chan’s assistant director for the films Fight Back to School (1991), Thunderbolt (1995) and Armageddon (1997). Lam later teamed up with Chan to co-direct Beast Cops (1998), a sensational hit at the 18th Hong Kong Film Awards that won Best Picture and Best Director.

Option Zero (1997) was Lam’s first solo effort as director, which was followed by the well-received Jiang Hu: The Triad Zone (2000) and Hit Team (2001), all of which were critically acclaimed. His profile soared to new heights in 2004 with the fantasy film The Twin Effects, marked by its fanciful action sequences and innovative plot. In 2008, Lam was named Best Director at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival for his critically acclaimed thriller Beast Stalker (2008), which also won accolades for actor Nick Cheung, solidifying the latter’s status as a thespian of note.

From Beast Stalker to The Stool Pigeon (2010) to The Viral Factor (2012), Lam’s action films eschew genre expectations with a narrative drive that focuses on family dynamics between characters. Since 2008, actors Nicholas Tse, Nick Cheung and Liu Kai-chi had been regulars in Lam’s work, their performances under Lam’s direction drawing special recognition. Aside from Cheung’s award-winning performance in Beast Stalker, Tse was named Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his turn as a police informant in The Stool Pigeon. For The Viral Factor (2012), Lam took his cast and crew to Malaysia and the Middle East and the resulting film features action sequences that rival those in Hollywood blockbusters. The director’s latest effort, That Demon Within, will be released in 2014.
