Every time I make a film, I feel as if I were reliving the lives and times of the characters. As such, film has bestowed many vastly different lives upon me.
Alex Law Kai-yui graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a double major in English and Chinese. He left for the United States in 1982 to pursue a Master’s Degree in Film Production at New York University, where he met Mabel Cheung, who later became his career partner.
In 1985, Law produced and wrote the screenplay for Cheung’s debut, Illegal Immigrants, which won the Jury Award at the Asia Pacific Film Festival. Cheung’s second film, An Autumn’s Tale, also produced and written by Law, went on to win four major trophies at the Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay.
Alex Law’s first film as a director, Painted Faces (1988), won seven accolades at the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay, as well as the Silver Hugo Award for Best First Feature at the 25th Chicago International Film Festival.
In subsequent years, Law produced and wrote numerous critically acclaimed or commercially successful films, including Now You See Love, Now You Don’t (1992), The Moon Warriors (1995), City of Glass (1998), Beijing Rocks (2001), as well as the documentary, Traces of a Dragon: Jackie Chan & His Lost Family (2003), all of which were showcased or winners at major international film festivals.
In 2005, Law worked as artistic director and playwright for the Beijing musical, Song of Light & Shadow, which captured the Gold Prize for Best Performance at the 4th “Ten Best Stage Performances Awards”.
Alex Law’s latest output as a film director was Echoes of the Rainbow (2010), which won the Crystal Bear Award at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival, as well as four major trophies at the Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Screenplay and Best Actor.
