Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild - Directors - Man Norman LAW
羅文 | LAW Man Norman

Some of the most memorable experiences in my directing career include watching my films on preview midnight screenings. There were much joy and hardship, but in the end the joy outweighed the hardship.

I appreciate all the actors I’ve worked with, because otherwise I would not have cast them. In my mind they were all the best!

If I did not become a director, I would probably have kept on being a make-up artist. Actually my makeup technique is quite good!

Norman Law Man was born in Macau in 1950 and joined Shaw Brothers in 1966 to work as make-up artist. During this time he got to know Ng See-yuen and became good friends, paving the way for their future collaboration. When Ng formed Seasonal Film Corporation in 1972, he invited Law to join him, and subsequently Law participated in many productions, including Little Superman (1975) and Kidnap in Rome (1976), both starring Leung Siu-lung. Law served as Ng See-yuen’s and Yuen Wo-ping’s assistant director and worked on such films as Anti Corruption (1975), Million Dollars Snatch (1976), Bruce Lee - True Story (1976), as well as Drunken Master (1978), directed by Yuen Wo-ping and starring Jackie Chan.

Law became a director in 1980 and had made many films of different genres over the years, including The Sweet & Sour Cops (1982), Gun is Law (1984), A Hearty Response (1986) and Walk on Fire (1988). In addition to being a director, Law also acted as executive producer and line producer for many films, including the Jet Tone Production releases Ashes of Time (1994), Chungking Express (1994), Fallen Angels (1995), Happy Together (1997), In the Mood for Love (2000), directed by Wong Kar-wai, and The Eagle Shooting Heroes Dong Cheng Xi Jiu (1993) and Chinese Odyssey (2002), directed by Jeff Lau Chun-wai. Aside from Jet Tone, Law also worked with other companies on such films as The Killer (1989), Thanks for Your Love (1996), 97’ Lan Kwai Fong (1997) and My Heart Will Go On (1999). Law was also responsible for overseas distribution of various films, arranging for their theatrical exhibition in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, Australia, Canada and the United States.
