Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild - Directors - Ying Lok Anthony LEE
李英洛 | LEE Ying Lok Anthony

Directing is the orchestration of film language so that what needs to be communicated is said with persuasive power interlaced with your personal touch so that the result is transformative in the hearts and minds of the audience.

At the end of a long filming session from The Incorruptible, where everyone was working days on end with little or no sleep, one of the gaffers, fell asleep standing up and dropped unceremoniously to the ground. Fortunately, he was not hurt. He quickly picked himself up, gave a quick word of apology and continued. Such was the tenacious endurance offered up as part of the crew’s professionalism and that sense of work ethics impressed me till this day.

I am impressed by Simon Yam’s acting, his professionalism and most importantly his unassuming, friendly and affable nature towards everyone regardless of his or her position; a gentleman on top of an artist.

If I quit directing, I wanted to be a fashion designer. I was accepted into Parsons School of Design for fashion, but New York did not agree with me; so I left and ended up in London studying film.

Born in Hong Kong in 1952, Anthony Lee Ying-lok studied at Pacific Lutheran University in Washington, U.S.A., graduating in 1975. He then obtained a diploma from London International Film School and a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California. In 1981, he was awarded the Director’s Fellowship by the American Film Institute and in 1983, he studied method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute while also attending Art Center College Of Design in Pasadena, California. Upon graduation, he worked as a director of commercials.

Lee directed two films in the 1990s, his debut the erotic drama The Girls from China (1992), starring Pauline Chan and Isabelle Chow. His sophomore project is The Incorruptible (1993), a story about the 1960s police inspector Charles Lee.

A member of the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild’s Executive Committee between 2004 and 2011, Lee currently teaches at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
