潘源良 | POON Yuen Leung Calvin
 Introduction

The theme song whispers next to my ear as my heartstrings glean the relish of the yesteryears.

As I close my eyes, the editing runs on its own, searching for the answer in every scene.

Some said you’ve past your prime and your elegance belongs to the century past.

Dressed in the latest special effects in makeup and continue to put on a façade of disingenuous adulation.

I don’t believe that the light has faded away; the feelings are only benumbed once in a blue moon.

The breakthroughs, the ordinary and the exquisite will eventually lead you to self-liberation.

The audience is the lover who brings you agony and ecstasy. Those who love you will wait patiently, so there is no need to rush to the ending right away.

 Biography

Calvin Poon Yuen-leung was born in 1958 in Hong Kong and graduated from the journalism and communication program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1981. Joining Cinema City in 1983, his first project was director Po-Chih Leong’s Banana Cop (1983), in which he took on the roles of screenwriter, assistant director, actor and lyricist of the theme song. Since then, Poon’s career had continued to blossom in these four capacities. Welcome (1985), Remains of a Woman (1993), Downtown Torpedoes (1997) and Hot War (1998) are among his most memorable screenwriting efforts.

In 1986, he took the director’s helm for the first time with Kiss Me Goodbye, a story of young love that resonated with young men and women of the time. It took 25 years before Poon directed another film, Hi, Fidelity (2001), which he co-wrote and which led him to a Best New Director nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Poon’s films are marked by their depiction of female psyche and the pitfalls of romantic desires. As a director, he relishes the opportunities to engage his actors in thorough discussions, whereas he hopes to provoke a deeper understanding of the characters’ attitudes and personalities that could lead to exceptional performances. He believes that there are enough dramatic elements in real life to ignite the explosive potential of the actors in his pursuit to touch the audience.
