Chris Sun Lap-key was born in Hong Kong in 1967, and graduated from St. Paul’s College. He joined the film industry in 1989 and served as assistant producer on various films including The Killer (1989), Dragon from Russia (1990) and The Raid (1991). He started working for StarTV in 1990 as program officer and was responsible for the preparation work leading to the station’s launch as well as a film-related program that profiled Chinese Filmmakers such as Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige and Tian Zhuangzhuang. In 1994, Sun was employed by Saatchi & Saatchi–Great Wall Advertising as the producer of its TV production department, producing TV commercials. Upon completing his contract, Sun returned to school and enrolled in Sheffield Hallam University to pursue a Master's degree in film directing and cinematography. After completing his studies, Sun started In-Gang Productions with friends to produce TV commercials and corporate videos. Concurrently, he served as Kam Kwok-leung’s assistant on the Blowing in the Wind segment in 4 Faces of Eve (1996), and directed the short film Forgetful Angel (1999), which won the Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze Cup (Section of Young Director) at the 50th Montecatini International Short Film Festival in Italy.

In 2000, Sun joined Metro Radio as a creative consultant and became the station’s creative director the following year. In 2004, Sun served as Consultant at Walt Disney Television International-Asian Pacific and was responsible for the TV promotion of Hong Kong Disneyland as well as the program, Magical World of Disneyland (2005). Upon finishing his duties at Disney, Sun returned to commercial film and media production work and became a director and producer for Video Channel Productions.

In 2011, Sun directed the 3D erotic film, 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, which grossed HK$41 million at the box office and inaugurated the trend of Mainlanders coming to Hong Kong to watch films. The following year, he produced Due West : Our Sex Journey (2012).
