Even though film is a lie told 24 times a second, as long as you put your best effort into it, the results will move people and inspire them to think. I hope I can do that.
Derek Tsang Kwok-cheung had wanted to work in the film industry from an early age. After finishing his studies in Canada, he joined Peter Chan’s Applause Pictures, working in posts such as assistant director, line producer, scriptwriter and editor. He also performed as an actor in over 20 local and international film productions, including AV (2005), On the Edge (2006), Isabella (2006), My Name Is Fame (2006), Claustrophobia (2009), Dream Home (2010), The Thieves (2012) and SDU: Sex Duties Unit (2013). In 2006, Tsang co-directed his first short with Jimmy Wan Chi-man, The Interpretation Of Dreams According To Chau Kung.
Tsang made his feature directorial debut with Lover’s Discourse (2010), co-directed again with Wan, fulfilling his dream of becoming a film director. The film garnered for him a nomination for the Best New Director Award at the 47th Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, and won the Best Film at the 6th Osaka Asian Film Festival in Japan.
Tsang continued his collaboration with Wan in 2011 and 2012, co-directing one segment of 4 + 1 Project (2010), which starred the famed Chinese actress Zhou Xun, as well as the feature film Lacuna (2012). They are in the process of developing their next feature.
