Michael Wong Man-tak was born in New York in 1965 to a Chinese father and an American mother who was an actress. He first came to Hong Kong in 1983, accompanying his brother Russell Wong, who was acting in a film by Cinema City. Michael moonlighted as stuntman and developed an interest in film. Wong’s acting career quickly took off, his beefy physique and good looks attracting offers from action movies, mostly for lawenforcement roles. He acted in over 90 films, the most renowned include Devoted to You (1986), Royal Warriors (1986), The Final Option (1994) and Treasure Hunt (1994). His turn as the instructor of the Police’s Special Duties Unit (SDU) in The Final Option was hugely popular, establishing him as the prototype of a special-force officer while earning him Best Actor nominations from the 33rd Golden Horse Awards and the 16th Hong Kong Film Awards.
In 2000, Wong formed his own production company and financed various projects, including Miles Apart, a police drama that marked his debut as producer and director. Besides being credited for the original story, Wong also played the lead role alongside Cecilia Yip.
Wong’s increased visibility also led to other opportunities. He played supporting roles in two of TVB’s prominent television serial dramas, At the Threshold of an Era (1999) and The Drive of Life (2007).
Wong, a professionally licensed pilot, enjoys operating private planes and helicopters. The aviation enthusiast is an honorary officer of the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps, with the rank of captain.
