 Biography

Herman Yau was born in Hong Kong in 1961. He studied film at the Department of Communication at Baptist College (now renamed the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University) between 1981 and 1984. In his student days, Yau was active in the rock music scene and in independent films. He entered film after leaving school and also penned columns for various publications, including Top, Jade Magazine, Ming Pao, Sing Tao Daily and Youth Weekly. He made music videos for local and international artists such as Chang Kuan, Jie Cheng Qiang, Anthony Wong Chau Sang, Jacky Cheung, Andy Hui, the Japanese band Mariko and the internationally renowned jazz musician Eric Marienthal. He also produced TV commercials and promos for the Hong Kong Film Awards. In addition, Yau participated in the filming of various RTHK series. In 2003, Yau directed an episode of a TV series produced by the Independent Committee Against Corruption to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Throughout his career, Yau had photographed and directed over 100 films. In 2001, he spent 14 months directing the box office hit Master Q 2001, the first Chinese language film that combined live action and 3-D computer animation, its special effects among the largest in scale in Chinese film history. The same year, Yau served as cinematographer for the special effects martial arts epic The Legend of Zu.

Many wards had been won by Yau’s work. In 1994, Anthony Wong received the Best Actor Award for his role in The Untold Story at the 13th Hong Kong Film Awards. Sammi Cheng was nominated for the Best Newcomer Award at the 12th Hong Kong Film Awards for her role in Best of the Best in 1993. Amanda Lee was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Yau-produced 9413… in 1998, at the 35th Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan and at the 18th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1999. Yau’s directorial efforts Walk In (1997), Troublesome Night 3 (1998), Shark Busters (2002), On the Edge (2006) and Whispers and Moans (2007) were selected by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society as its recommended films for the years 1997, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2007, respectively. In 1997, Yau was chosen as the Best Alternative Director by internet voters for Walk In and received the Best Director Award at the Golden Bauhina Awards in 2002 for From the Queen to the Chief Executive (2001), for which actor David Lee was nominated for the Best Supporting actor Award at the 21st Hong Kong Film Awards and screenwriter Yang Yee-shan was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 38th Golden Horse Award in Taiwan. From the Queen to the Chief Executive was chosen by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society as its recommended film and one of the top 10 Chinese language films of 2001 by the Hong Kong Film Critics Association. Yau was awarded Best Director at the 9th Golden Bauhinia Awards in 2004 for Give Them a Chance.

Yau had also earned international renown. The Untold Story (1993) and Ebola Syndrome (1996) were regarded as cult classics by many European and American critics. From the Queen to the Chief Executive was shown in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival and was awarded the Golden Torch Award by the International Catholic Organization for Cinema and Audiovisual. In 2007, Yau was honored as the Director in Focus by the 31st Hong Kong International Film Festival. That year, he was selected Fanta Master at the 11th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival.

Ever active, Yau co-founded China Youth Weekly, Big Screen Bi- Weekly and Cine Art Magazine. In 1997, together with a group of friends from different backgrounds who shared the same belief in writing, he founded the publishing house. Step Forward Media Company.

Yau also hold a Master’s Degree from Lingnan University in the field of cultural studies. In 1999, Hong Kong Polytechnic University invited Yau to be their first Artist-in-Residence. For seven years, from 1996 to 2002, Yau served as a jury member for the Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards, organized by the Hong Kong Art Centre. In 2002 and 2003, Herman was invited as a consultant for the Masters Degree Programme in Multimedia and Entertainment Technology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and since 2003, he has served as consultant for the Hong Kong Art Development Board. He is currently a member of the Hong Kong Society of Cinematographers.
